Understanding JEE Cutoffs

📊 What is a Cutoff?

A cutoff is the minimum qualifying rank/percentile required to secure admission in a particular college and branch. Cutoffs vary by institute, branch, category, and year based on demand and seat availability.

🎯 JEE Main Cutoff

  • Percentile-based: Usually expressed in percentile (e.g., 99.5%ile)
  • Rank conversion: Percentile converted to All India Rank (AIR)
  • Used for: NITs, IIITs, GFTIs admission
  • JEE Advanced eligibility: Top 2.5 lakh qualify

🏆 JEE Advanced Cutoff

  • Rank-based: Direct All India Rank (AIR)
  • Minimum marks: Also need minimum aggregate marks
  • Used for: IIT admission only
  • Category-wise: Different cutoffs for each category

🔑 Key Terms to Understand

Opening Rank:

The rank of the first candidate who got admission. Better rank = Opening.

Closing Rank:

The rank of the last candidate who got admission. This is the actual cutoff.

Home State (HS):

Cutoff for candidates from the same state (50% quota in NITs).

Other State (OS):

Cutoff for candidates from all other states (all-India competition).

💡 Factors Affecting Cutoffs

  • Number of applicants: More students = higher cutoff
  • Exam difficulty: Harder exam = lower cutoff
  • Number of seats: More seats = slightly lower cutoff
  • Previous year trends: Past patterns influence current cutoffs
  • Branch popularity: CSE has highest, Civil has lowest
  • College reputation: Top colleges have higher cutoffs
  • Location: Metro cities have higher cutoffs
  • Placement records: Better placements = higher demand
